Abstract

Asurvey of 150 randomly selected students of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Nigeria, Nsukka was conducted to determine sources of information on HIV/AIDS education and perceived factors fuelling the HIV/AIDS infection among youths. The findings revealed that a majority (60%) of the students first heard of HIV/AIDS about nine years ago and received information on HIV/AIDS mostly through the mass media, especially radio. Other sources of information were parents/ relatives, hospitals/ health centers and posters/ pamphlets. However, university lecturers ranked among the least sources of information available to students on issues related to HIV/AIDS. The results of the study also showed that having multiple sexual partners, forced sex, sharing sharp instruments, blood transfusion, lack of information and peer group influence were perceived factors fuelling the spread of the disease among The study highlights the need to expand the academic curriculum through planned programmes aimed at knowledge and skill acquisition as well as attitudinal change among youths to help in mitigating the spread of the disease as well as initiating policies that will protect youths from all forms of abuse and violence.
